Update July 3

Good morning, following your comments I messaged the EFF, foundation responsible of defending your rights in the internet to let them know that their petition is archived, since I'm not sure if they are aware of that. In meantime I updated the petition link with another one available on their website, which you can find in here: Contact Your Lawmakers and Speak Out Against the TPP (U.S.) It's in a form of auto-generated message on the right side of the website, you can edit it to your own needs of course or write it on your own, it's a nice solution though if you don't know how to put it all in pretty words. It basically covers up your concern about TPP as a consumer and constituent, asks for releasing the secret documents so they could be available to public and asks for the right to have any input in TPP agreement (remember to read that message before sending it, be aware of what you're doing :) ).

You can also sign up another petition
www.avaaz.org/en/millions_to_s… (it may look silly with death star picture and all that, but it's actually a valid petition going to reach 2 million votes soon. Let's make this happen)

As soon as EFF updates their petition link with new one or provides any other ways for how we may make a difference, I'll let you know.

TPP

So I usually don't take a part in these kinds of things, but when the topic of limiting internet freedom and privacy comes back, I'm feeling honestly very bothered. Especially when I recall how the government tries to enforce the laws limiting internet for some time already (SOPA, ACTA). The topic comes back under different names and different forms and the only thing that changes is its name and how much more sneaky they are trying to be about it. This time though the thing is so much bigger than before and covers up many different, important aspects of our everyday lives.

And this is something what is happening right now, even though we are meant to be not aware of that. Please read this journal, or at least watch the video and please try to spread the word. I know you may think you alone make no difference, but believe me you do. A whole lot of people have no idea about it, possibly just as you didn't know till now and I think we have to be aware of that. That's the only way to put the spotlight on it, before we can even consider taking any steps in stopping it. Especially that right now we, as public, are completely cut out of this discussion.

Video

I know it may seem boring and confusing and you may feel like you have no time for this right now, but please please watch the video, it explains everything in a very clear, simple to understand way, it’s only 2:40 long and its about something what may affect every single, even the tiniest one of us in a very painful way.

Information

(info is fully copy pasted from different sources linked below)

Obama just signed a law allowing him to fast track TPP and other “trade agreements”, allowing him to accept it with just a simple majority.

what is TPP (Trans-Pacific Partnership)?

The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is a secretive, multinational trade agreement that threatens to extend restrictive intellectual property (IP) laws across the globe and rewrite international rules on its enforcement. Only a small part of TPP is actually about trade, and it will affect every aspect of your life from healthcare to food to internet.

The main problems are:

(1) Intellectual Property Chapter: Leaked draft texts of the agreement show that the IP chapter would have extensive negative ramifications for users’ freedom of speech, right to privacy and hinder peoples' abilities to innovate.

(2) Lack of Transparency: The entire process shrouded in secrecy.

The twelve nations currently negotiating the TPP are the US, Japan, Australia, Peru, Malaysia, Vietnam, New Zealand, Chile, Singapore, Canada, Mexico, and Brunei Darussalam. The TPP contains a chapter on intellectual property covering copyright, trademarks, and patents. Since the draft text of the agreement has never been officially released to the public, we know from leaked documents, such as the May 2014 draft of the TPP Intellectual Property Chapter [PDF], that US negotiators are pushing for the adoption of copyright measures far more restrictive than currently required by international treaties, including the controversial Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA).

The TPP Will Rewrite Global Rules on Intellectual Property Enforcement

In short, countries would have to abandon any efforts to learn from the mistakes of the US and its experience with the DMCA over the last 12 years, and adopt many of the most controversial aspects of US copyright law in their entirety. At the same time, the US IP chapter does not export the limitations and exceptions in the US copyright regime like fair use, which have enabled freedom of expression and technological innovation to flourish in the US. It includes only a placeholder for exceptions and limitations. This raises serious concerns about other countries’ sovereignty and the ability of national governments to set laws and policies to meet their domestic priorities.

This won’t happen in a court of your own country, this will place an international court above your laws. Consumer rights, from food to your favourite hobby, will be raped mercilessly. Think it’s bad now? You haven’t seen anything.

TPP will make it easier to outsource labor in Asia

From governmental contracts to code monkeys trough services, you will be competing with third-world slave labor and buying its products. Should you be able to afford it and have some free time as your working hours get closer to those of Vietnam

TPP can force your ISP to monitor your internet activity, and fine you or even send you to jail.

It will be possible to fine you even just for copying a DVD you own to your hard drive. It’s SOPA and all that shit right back from the dead.

I’m in EU, who gives a shit!

TTIP is the same shit EU-flavoured and it’s going to hurt you. It will be negotiated by that most democratic institution called the European Commission, so you know you’re fucked.

Why You Should Care

TPP raises significant concerns about citizens’ freedom of expression, due process, innovation, the future of the Internet’s global infrastructure, and the right of sovereign nations to develop policies and laws that best meet their domestic priorities. In sum, the TPP puts at risk some of the most fundamental rights that enable access to knowledge for the world’s citizens.

I don’t believe you OP, I want to read what it says!

Well too fucking bad, because it isn’t just secret, it will remain secret for four years after it’s accepted. Talk about transparency. However a small part has been leaked, you can read more here:

And some articles:

What You Can Do

Sign up the petition www.avaaz.org/en/millions_to_s… (it may look silly with death star picture and all that, but it's actually a valid petition going to reach 2 million votes soon. Let's make this happen)

(UPDATED) Are you in the United States?

Contact Your Lawmakers and Speak Out Against the TPP (U.S.), Demand your state representatives oppose any initiative to enact Fast Track (aka Trade Promotion Authority), which hands their own constitutional authority to debate and modify trade law.

For more information on other aspects of the TPP, visit Public Citizen’s resource page.

Local Actions Around the World

  • If you're in Canada, you can use the Council of Canadians' tool to send a message to your international trade minister and members of the parliamentary trade committee to release the secret TPP text and negotiate the deal with proper public input.
  • 日本に住んでいる方には、Stop TPP!! ウェブページでご案内できますし、Stop TPPのT−シャツを買う事もできます。

Other than than you can spread the word, we proved many times already that as a mass we can really make a difference and I think this case needs same powerful pressure and response as the previous ones in the past. Add #TPP to your hashtags, post in social media, talk to your friends and family about it. Help people be aware of how they're being robbed from information and their freedom of choice. Don't do it for me, do it for yourself.
